Rebirth of Adventure retreat
a guatemalan journey
tikal+Yaxha+crater Azul+Flores+lake atitlan
co hosted with Mark Elmy
We hesitate to call it a retreat, it is not about withdrawing from the world but fully entering into the experience of it. We aim to bring you to and remind you of the adventure that exists in all realms. From the physical journey through lush jungles and beautiful mountains to the spiritual journey to ancient temples and the vortex of Lake Atitlan, we have curated some of the most moving of our experiences and time here in this beautiful country we call home.
We have chosen the thirteen-day period in the Maya ritual calendar which signifies rebirth, with the intention of rebirthing the spirit of adventure within all of us.
The Journey
We will meet in the capital, Guatemala City, on the evening of November 6th to open the space and connect with our group before flying to Peten, Northern Guatemala, the following morning.
In the jungles of Peten we will visit the Maya temple sites of Yaxha and Tikal. You will have the opportunity to explore these sites, lovingly guided by your hosts. In our schedule we have planned a day at each site, staying in a jungle lodge at each site so that we can experience the sunsets at each site. We also have a visit to the beautiful “Crater Azul” planned before some time to relax and explore the island of Flores.
From Peten, we will fly back to Guatemala City where we will stay for a night before taking the road to Lake Atitlan and our home base near San Marcos la Laguna. This beautiful journey finishes with the spectacular descent from Santa Clara to San Pablo, where we get our first full view of the lake as we negotiate the 17 vueltas. During our time at the lake, we will visit weaving cooperatives and local artists in San Juan and Santiago, see coffee production from harvest to roasting, as well as making a fire ceremony beside the lake. We will visit the hot springs in the western highlands and make a journey to the cloud forest to see the Resplendent Quetzal, the national bird of Guatemala, in its natural environment. We will also visit a cacao plantation to see where the “food of the gods” grows and take the opportunity to watch the sunrise from a peak above the lake.
Our next stop is the charming UNESCO world heritage city of Antigua Guatemala, founded in 1543. We will take some time here exploring the city. Finally, we will return to Guatemala City to explore the anthropology and weaving museums before departure on November 20th.
